History and Leadership

Drs. Andy Benson (Director) and Bob Hutkins formed the Gut Function Initiative in 2003, with the goal of establishing a university-wide program in gut biology and health. They were soon joined in 2006 by Dr. Jens Walter, a molecular ecologist from Gerald Tannock's lab in New Zealand and in 2008 by Dr. Dan Peterson, an immunologist form the Gordon group at Washington University. Other researchers from Departments of Statistics, Computer Science, Biology, Nutrition, and Veterinary science are now part of this Initiative.
